Sidekick LX

Sidekick 4 (LX) from T-Mobile

These days, my phone is an MDA from T-Mobile. I originally had a Sidekick 1, also from T-Mobile, but I got so damn tired of waiting for the Sidekick 3 (and my phone was, shall we say, well-loved) that I upgraded to an MDA. This after my amigo Bailey showed me a full-length movie over lunch playing on his. You can read the full saga of that mess here.

The Sidekick was nice for what it was. The web browsing wasn't all that hot, but the full keyboard was brilliant. I wrote many a short short story on that thing. I have fond memories, but the wait was just too damn long and I keep hearing grumbling from the people who are still on the Sidekick line of phones. I haven't heard anything recently, honestly (mostly because everybody I know also got an MDA) but the main problem was lack of apps and lack of the Danger people (makers of the Sidekick) wanting to let people get at the home-grown apps people were making available with a developer's key.

Boy Genius Report (which is a fucking great name for a website, guys) has an unboxing, a photo gallery (one of which we've used here) and a brief write-up and I must say, the minor gripes sound very familiar. Not sure what they mean by no WiFi (how can you have no WiFi…? Stephen Fry would be scandalized…) and nothing transfers from your Sidekick 3 so you get to repurchase everything. Fun.

While it is black (and while it pains me not to have a black MDA and the Sidekick 2 did come in a black version), I don't think I'll be jumping at it to upgrade any time soon.
